A Minor Clarification...

This clarification has to do with my last Five For Friday regarding things I've tried but just can't get on board with.  It has been brought to my attention that Twilight did not make the list.  There are reasons for this that I will now use to bore you to death.  Unless you're such a faithful reader that you care about the deepest depths of my screwed up mind.  Yeah...deepest depths.  This should be interesting, right?

I haven't even TRIED to read or watch Twilight.  The Five for Friday was a list of things that I've tried and can't deal with.  But since I've not even tried dealing with Twilight, it couldn't have rationally and/or logically made the list.

I refuse the Twilight hype...both the books and the movies...for a multitude of reasons.  I am apathetic about the two for separate reasons, but I'm opposed to both.  I don't like reading about/watching/learning about/cohorting with vampires.  Never have.  Not because I'm afraid of them or anything...I just think they're kind of...lame.  I've never liked anything associated with them short of a very old comedic movie with a young Jim Carrey in it.  And I only liked that because it was funny.  Like how she always bites off his buttons.

Anyhoo, I digress.  I love Stephen King and only got through about a third of Salem's Lot.  At one point in time I owned every movie with Tom Cruise in it (before he got weird, people) except for Interview with a Vampire.  I'm just not into it.

There are some of you out there saying, "But the Twilight books are sooo well written!!  Being a literary fanatic, you'd love them."  Ummm...no.  This is coming from the same person who did NOT read Harry Potter books.  I don't do children's fiction.  Yes, I said children.  A teenager is still a child.  I may change my mind when Jayna is older and I'm trying like hell to find something with which to connect with her.  But until then, I like to read classic literature or something that makes me think.  My favorite authors are Stephen King and Kurt Vonnegut.  They write adult books.  And they're very interesting to me.

There are some of you out there saying, "But the movies are such a looooovvve story.  It's sooo cute and sweet."  Ummm...no.  Not a big love story fan.  Again, I like movies that make me think.  I'm not a romcom fan or a sappy love story fan.  I have a very select few romcoms that I watch if they are on television and I'm bored.  This doesn't happen very often.

There are some of you out there saying, "But once you start reading/watching Twilight, you won't be able to stop!!"  Ummm...no.  Look, people...I can't invest myself into anything else right now.  I've been trying to read The Stand for, like, 3 months and am not even halfway through it.  I have about 7 different shows with atleast 2 episodes each of DVR'd material.  I can't commit to something else.  Not now.  Maybe not ever.  Who knows...

There are some of you out there saying, "But don't you think Edward Cullen is soooo freakin' hot?!?"  Ummm...no.  He's just not my type.  Y'all know my husband.  He's not a vampire who'll drink my blood when I'm asleep.  I know, I know...Edward is a vegetarian vampire.  Neato.

So, that's what is up with me and Twilight.  Anymore questions?  It's nothing personal.  I know there are a jillion people out there who love it and think it's the most wonderful thing.  I'm just not one of them.

@$*% It Monday

"Can you do that, Danielle? It's only Monday and usually you aren't pissed until Friday. And don't you have a birthday party to blog about instead?"

Why yes, readers, I do have a birthday party to blog about. But I most certainly have something else that I must get off my chest before I write the ever-so-coveted Jayna's First Birthday Party Blog Post (complete with photos, of course).

I figure Monday simultaneously sucks and blows so why not be pissed on Monday and save Friday for margaritas and pedicures, right? RIGHT!! And this will *most definitely* piss off atleast one of you (either because you have a guilty conscience or because I'm writing about you) and you'd all rather be pissed on Monday too, right? RIGHT!! Except the ones I'm writing about don't read my blog, so nevermind...they're "too busy."

I am dropping the dead weight in my life. What exactly is the definition of dead weight? Well, according to thefreedictionary.com:

dead weight or dead·weight (ddwt)
n.
1. The unrelieved weight of a heavy, motionless mass.
2. An oppressive burden or difficulty.
3. Abbr. DW The fixed weight of a structure or piece of equipment, such as a bridge on its supports. Also called dead load.

So, there you have it. "The unrelieved weight of a heavy, motionless mass." Who knew that the definition would perfectly match the description I had in my head? Score one for Danielle on a Monday morning!!

I am officially done with heavy, motionless masses. I've made more room in my cell phone for people who return phone calls and care about people other than themselves. And, as y'all know, once you're deleted from the cell phone, it's officially over. No more drunk-dialing. No more late-night booty calls. No more "I'm sad and no one will talk to me" messages...even though I've done none of those things in years. Well, atleast 5 years. Or so.

I will admit to having occasional slip-ups, as we all do, but I am generally an easy-going all-around good friend. I do forget a birthday every now and then (sorry Amanda) and I do become absorbed in my own life from time to time (sorry everyone who listened to me worry about the birthday party) and I sometimes want to drop off the face of the earth and stay there for a short time (sorry everyone after the miscarriage). Sooo, if you are reading this and are seeking a friend who cares about things other than herself and loves to help people and listen to people and just generally be an awesome friend, send me a comment!! There's plenty of room in the phone now.

I feel so free!! I am now relieved of my heavy, motionless masses! Goodbye, toxic people! I wish you all the best, but you'll never know that...because you won't call or text back and you sure as hell won't read this!! But in the event that you do read this and begin to feel guilty, leave me a voicemail if you call. I won't know it's you since I've erased your phone numbers.

Good day. I said Good day, sir!

F@%k It Friday

Inappropriate title? Hard to tell. But it's my blog and if you don't like it, stop reading. :) Why F&^k It Friday? Because I'm going to write about something that is eating me...and I probably shouldn't write about it. So F#*k It. Oh, and it's Friday. See the connection now??

I worry. I'm human and I worry. I am a parent and I worry. I think it just comes naturally to me. I don't know how to stop worrying. If I did I'm sure I'd be rich by now. Think of the money I could make teaching people how NOT to worry...

Anyhoo, I worry. That was the point of all that jibberish up there. I think you've gotten the point. And I'm currently in a silent argument with my babysitter. And, again, I worry. Why don't I just sit down and talk it out with her? Well, that's easier said than done. I'll instead choose to passive-aggressively write about this on my blog and hope she reads and understands.

My babysitter is my sister-in-law...my brother's wife. She and I have become fairly close over the course of the last 7 years. We started out rocky, but we've both grown up alot and we've become pretty good friends. Atleast I think so. In retrospect, I should have never mixed family/friends with business...the business of caring for my child.

It's not to say that I don't think Summer does an EXCELLENT job with Jayna. I think Jayna is in the best of hands when she's with Summer. I do. And I don't worry 95% of the time. When I do worry it's mostly because Jayna is sick or acting crazy. And I worry more about what's wrong with the kid than I do about how well she's taken care of. I just know that it would be WAY EASIER to discuss disagreements with someone who I didn't also have a personal relationship with. If I had a babysitter that I only saw when I dropped off and picked up Jayna, I'd just tell her what I thought and that would be the end. And that's just not so when you have a personal relationship with the person who cares for your kid.

Jayna loves Summer. She likes her routine at Summer's. She is comfortable there and it's familiar to her. I love that. I also love that Jayna gets more one-on-one attention with Summer than she would at a daycare. I know that she's being changed and fed and that she's taking her naps. I do NOT mind if Jayna interacts with other children. I think that is great! I would love for my kid to know other kids and learn to play and get along with them. What parent doesn't want that??

I also know that Summer relies on me. She relies on having Jayna so she can get paid. We all rely on the money we make from working! That's a fact of life! And this is why I feel bad if I feel like I need to make alternate arrangements for Jayna's babysitting. I feel bad that it is money out of Summer's pocket. But when cirumstances change and I'm not comfortable with what's going on in the day-to-day care of my kid, I must make a decision. And when I'm notified of the changing circumstances only 2 weeks ahead of time, I feel...unhappy. I feel like I only have limited options. I wasn't lied to, but information was left out.

The other side of that is that I rely on Summer. I rely on her to be ready and willing and able to watch Jayna. I rely on her to make sure Jayna has what she needs and make sure Jayna's happy. I also rely on her to be honest and upfront with me...which she does 99% of the time. And I will, in turn, be honest and upfront with her.

I sometimes have difficulty keeping up with Jayna. I sometimes take my eyes off of her at home and I lose her. She crawls fast and she's sneaky. If I had more than one kid...or 5 kids...I'd lose my mind. Especially if there were limited activities for said children to do. I'd be crazy by the end of the day and admitted by the end of the week. I'd be frustrated and tired and cranky. And as a mother, I wouldn't want my kid there.

So, it's that plain and simple. Five kids is alot for one person in a packed up small apartment. They all have to be fed and some have to have diapers changed and some have to have naps, etc. Five is alot. Dare I say too many.

What am I worried about? Hurt feelings. Empty pockets. My kid. But, as I said, F#!k It. I've gotta get this off of my mind.

7 Year Itch

Today is my 7 year anniversary. Seven years. Seven. Shouldn't I be on the verge of divorce or separation or something? It seems that very few people these days make it to 7 years without having gone through some serious rocky roads. Not ice cream. I mean hard times. Maybe they should all go eat ice cream. It does clear the mind and put things into perspective.

See, the thing is that I don't see that. I don't see rocky roads ahead. I only see Cherry Garcia and Mint Chocolate Cookie and Half Baked. I see only good things ahead of us. It seems that our life together is just beginning...even 7 years later.

I think that mindset is what makes our marriage work. Yes, we do all the other things that make a marriage work also, but it's the mindset that we're always only just beginning. We have so much life left to live together and we enjoy every minute of it together...even if we're enjoying it by bitching and crying in our beers together. I know. I just said that I enjoy bitching. But isn't that what a friend is? Someone who'll listen to you bitch and then join in with you?

And Chris is my best friend. There is nothing that I keep from him. When we have issues, we talk them out. It sometimes takes me a few days...months...to get around to verbalizing my feelings, but I do. And then we work through it together. Together. There's no "I" in team, people.

We are a team. One of the best teams ever. We'd be an awesome wrestling tag team. When one of us slacks, the other picks up the slack without being asked to...or forced to. And the slacker then realizes that the favor must be returned at a later date. When one of us is drowning, the other jumps in feet first and pulls the other out. It's just how we roll. We got each others' backs, yo.

We do disagree from time to time...alot of time with very little time in between. We have differing view points on a multitude of things, but we always keep in mind what is really important. We have lapses. Everyone does. We forget things but are always quickly reminded by the other. We get mad and we give each other the silent treatment but we apologize...ALWAYS before bed. We get frustrated with one not rinsing the dishes and the other not turning socks right-side-out but we always remember that we both do these things and that it's just not all that important. We are not perfect in the eyes of the many.

But we are perfect in the eyes of the important...the two of us. Chris is perfectly flawed to me. And I am confident that I can say I am perfectly flawed in his eyes.

Seven year itch? Of course. I itch everyday to continue our awesome relationship. I itch to see our future unfold in front of us. I itch for more delicious ice cream...I've never cared for rocky road.

Thank you, Chris, for more than I could ever list. For more than I could ever say or write. There is no worthy Hallmark card. Not even the ones that play music. The only worthy sentiment is straigh from Louis. I love you, Christopher.

An Alternative Philosophy

So, my attitude has been for shit lately. I hate everything except my kid and my husband. I've even disliked my dogs...they drive me crazy in sooo many ways. I still love them but I'm a little overwhelmed and they aren't helping matters. I had some sort of zen moment on Saturday and I made a few observations that must be acknowledged and written down.
  • The hubs and I are feeding off of one another's bad attitudes. It begins with me hating life and before you know it, he hates life. And as soon as I start feeling better about life, he hates it and then I do too. Break the cycle!!
  • Home is where we are. Home is what we make it. Home is family and cuddling and relaxing on the patio and eating good food and playing with the baby and the pooches. We do not like our house. We do not like this city. But the fact of the matter is we're here and we're going to be here for awhile. That won't change for a bit. Let's make the most of it and find the positive instead of all the negative. God knows there is ENOUGH negativity around us...it'll be a good challenge of the mind to find the positive around us.
  • All jobs suck. No matter what career path you choose, there will be bad things. Yes, some are worse. And others are THE WORST. Chalk it up to life experience. We could be out of work and living with our parents or in the car. Count your blessings...there are guys out there with no feet (who will actually get that??).
  • It has been recently pointed out to me by a good friend that I don't have it so bad. And I believe her. She says that I have a nice home, a great marriage, a kid who is wonderful and healthy and stuff and that I atleast have a job. Oh, and I'm not poor...and that's important in this economy. And she is 100% right. Now write that down, friend. You know, that I said you were 100% right. It may be the only time you'll ever hear me say that.
  • I need to get out of my own head and observe more, listen more, see more, feel more...LIVE more. I'm not using my senses the way I normally do. Life is flying by me and I'm not even paying attention. Make the lists, but don't make it a priority to finish them. LIVE LIFE. And then record it.

And my new favorite song...

Darius Rucker is awe. some. Yes, he was Hootie. And no, I don't normally listen to country music. I don't really think of this as country music (even though it is). He has another song called "It won't be like this for long" that almost makes me cry everytime I hear it. Wonderful stuff.

So, it's alright. I'll be okay. :)

Note to self:

No, seriously.
  • Upload, print and organize snapshots for May and June.
  • Finish book of professional portraits.
  • Finish Jayna's 2 scrapbooks in the next 10 weeks.
  • Fill frames on dining room wall with photos. Is it 40 portrait and 42 landscape or vice versa?
  • Count portrait and landscape photos in frames in dining room.
  • Drink lots of vodka.
  • Keep up with blog.
  • Open new savings account for new house down payment. MAKE THIS A PRIORITY AND TAKE IT SERIOUSLY.
  • Deposit Jayna's money into her savings account.
  • Clean out bedroom closet.
  • List things for sale on Craigslist.
  • Pet my dogs.
  • Figure out Father's Day gifts.
  • Figure out anniversary plans.
  • Upload photos to Flickr and Facebook.
  • Start planning for Jayna's birthday.
  • Kiss my husband.
  • Make Anthony's necklace and bracelet.
  • Get new umbrella stroller.
  • Take Jayna swimming.
  • Smile more.

And now I'm relieved because that's all in writing but overwhelmed because it's a list of a million things. I plan to begin crossing things off TODAY. We'll see how that goes...

Some Words to Live By

My brain is on crazy mode right now. Things are just nuts in there and I'm afraid that it probably won't settle down for awhile. During my daily blog read today, I found this on Nicole's blog and thought it was helpful...

{45 Things}
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone...
4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first pay check.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.
19. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion, Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone and everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give it time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.
35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative – dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
42. The best is yet to come.
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

I think it should be called "46 Things" and "It's only money. You can make more." should be added. Not that you shouldn't save and spend wisely...just don't let it consume you. I found numbers 2, 3, 13, 17, 20, 22, 26, 31, 35 and 40. Hopefully the hubs finds this helpful also...
I do realize that this list includes things about G. O. D. and that most of you know my relationship with the so-called big man (or woman), but it's my blog and I'll write what I want. This list helped me in a sort-of-rough time and to me, that's what matters.

It's gotta be better than crushing rocks for a dollar a day.

That's the longest blog title ever. But it's appropriate.

I'll admit it right now: I'm not a giver. Atleast not to charity. I do donate a dollar here and there to Riley or March of Dimes when I buy something at Target or the gas station, but as far as regularly giving, I don't do it. I can't afford it, especially now that I have a young child and we live in an economy equivalent to a toilet. One time when I lived in Bloomington, the Fraternal Order of Police called me. The guy asked me to donate money. I told him that I was a college student and that I did not have any money to donate. The very next day I got another call from the SAME Fraternal Order. I told them that just yesterday a guy called and I told him that I had no extra money (EXTRA money...oxymoron, huh?) to give. The Fraternal Order guy said, "Yes, I know we called you yesterday, but your response was not satisfactory." WTF?!? It isn't satisfactory that I'm in college and working full time and can't afford to give you 25 bucks? Go suck eggs, dude.
So I'm not a charity donator. I wish I was. If I had more money, I'd donate. Really, I would. But only to worthy causes. I refuse to buy magazine subscriptions so a high school kid can go on vacation. I will never do that. Go get a REAL job like the rest of us had in high school...or don't go on vacation. I will not buy coupon books with coupons that I will NEVER use in a MILLION years, i.e. ZooBook. I will never use 700 bucks worth of golf coupons. Especially since I live in a place where I could only play golf for less than half the year. I will not use 23 oil change coupons in the one year before the book expires. Do the math...I'd have to drive almost 70,000 miles a year to use that many oil change coupons. Not. Gonna. Happen.

But I do wear jewelry. I do support recycling. I do support helping people help themselves (with LIFE, not VACATIONS). And I like pretty things. I am a girl after all. And I love BeadforLife. I love what they're about and I love what they're doing. We live in a country where breaking rocks in a quarry for 10 hours a day in 100+ degree weather only to go home with ONE dollar is simply unimaginable. We can't fathom that. We, in our egotistical, egocentric mindsets would simply refuse. And then we'd go stand at the interstate exit ramp with a sign. I'm not trying to piss off anyone. I'm just saying.

So, please go check out BeadforLife. Those women make some beautiful beaded jewelry...out of recycled magazines!! It really is amazing. I'm wearing a bracelet RIGHT NOW and no one knows it was made from paper. My mom has a turquoise-colored one and people think it is real turquoise. And if you got an invitation to my open house for Saturday, please try and make an appearance. If you didn't receive an invite and you want one, please let me know ASAP!! You won't be sorry. I'm even baking cupcakes!! There are bracelets that start at just 5 bucks. And it really is a good cause.
This photo is courtesy of BeadforLife. Aren't these just amazing??

Worry Worry Worry, Part Deux...

And again, good grief. This is a message post...and a ballsy move for me. This could potentially end a long friendship, but it needs to be said. I don't even know if this person reads my blog regularly, but I guess we'll see. You know who you are.

Dear Friend,

I know you talked to husband about the conversation I had with him, even if it was briefly. I don't know exactly what he told you, but I'd bet that something or other has been misconstrued...as it most times is when he said/she said happens.

I am not mad at you, per se. I'm not mad at you for what you did. I feel bad for husband. I feel bad for you. And I feel bad for children. I wish that things could be worked out, but I don't live there and I don't know exactly what has happened. And according to both parties, things will never be worked out. And that's understandable.

What I do know is that you lied to me. Omission is lying in my mind. Conveniently leaving things out that are vital parts of the story isn't cool. That upset me. Not because of what really happened, but because you lied to me. I thought we were better friends than that. It's taken me awhile to come to terms with that. I know we don't talk as much as we should. I know you're busy. And so am I. But it seems that our relationship is so damn one-sided. And it upsets me.

I realize that the last thing you need is for someone else to be pissed and unload on you. I understand that my feelings are probably the least of your worries at this point. And I understand if you yourself are a little upset with me for talking to husband. But remember, I am neutral. I told him the same basic things that I told you. That I empathize with you (and I also empathize with him) and that if you two are going to end it, JUST DO IT! I understand that it isn't that easy, but you aren't doing anyone any favors by delaying things.

I am trying desperately to look past the omissions and take what you've told me as a cry for help. You wanted to tell me. You wanted to let me in. You just didn't want to let me in all the way. Again, understandable. But things like this really weigh in on the trust factor.

I do hope that you aren't angry...with me, atleast. I am trying my damnedest to stay neutral. I'd like to not lose friends over this. I can see that this will be difficult to say the least. I just think we need to talk face-to-face. We should arrange that.

I'm worried about you. I worry about you constantly. I worry about husband and kids. I worry that something crazy is going to happen. And when you shut me out I worry even more. And the day may eventually come when I have to stop worrying for my own sanity. I love you girl, but you make me crazy. I'm here. That's all I can do...be here. It's up to you from there. I will not continue to drag things out of you. You're just going to have to let me in...and trust me.
